8:00AM - 8:30AM Registration

8:30AM - 9:00AM Welcome and Orientation
Neil R. Gumenick, M.Ac., (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac., Director
David Goodell, L.Ac., M.Ac., Ac. M. (UK), Dipl. Ac., Symposium Co-Chair
Eliot Ivanhoe, M.D., M.Ac. (UK), Symposium Co-Chair

9:00AM - 11:00AM Awakening the Senses: Body/Mind/Spirit Jane Grissmer, M.Ac., L.Ac., and Linda Simons, RN, M.Ac., L.Ac.
Mastery of our senses is at the heart of our work as Five Element acupuncturists and allows us to see a patient in wholeness, with every possibility of their unique being realized. This session will help participants expand their sensory awareness, experience the correspondences and each of the 5 elements as a resonance in nature, and grasp the value and significance of causative factor.

11:00AM - 11:30AM Break

11:30AM - 12:30PM The Diagnostics of Color and Sound
Niki Bilton, M.Ac. (UK), MBAcC, L.Ac.

This presentation will review the five sounds and five colors of the five elements, using recorded and live readings and observation of live faces. Participants will deepen their practical grasp of the examination skills through experiential exercises and discussion. The aim of the session is to encourage mastery of observation and listening, leading to greater efficacy of clinical diagnosis and treatment assessment.

12:30PM - 2:00PM Lunch

2:00PM - 3:30PM The Diagnostics of Color and Sound (continued)

3:30PM - 4:00PM Break

4:00PM - 5:30PM Integration of Acupuncture and Western Medicine
George Rodriguez, M.D.

Acupuncture is rapidly gaining recognition in the Western medical model for a variety of conditions. Many Western medical practitioners are not familiar with acupuncture and its benefits. Familiarity with the mentality, language and goals of each style of medicine are key to optimizing the beneficial effects of both approaches. Dr. Rodriguez will present examples of opportunities for acupuncturists to expand their practices and develop a patient referral base from Western medical practitioners.

5:30PM Social: Cabanas by Viceroy Santa Monica Pool

Saturday September 10, 2011

7:30AM - 8:45AM Roots and Branches 5 Element Qi Gong
Stephen "Tuna" Flores, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.
Pat Gorman, M.Ac., B.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.

This beautiful system of Qi Gong movements, breathing, and energetic massages brings together the Five Element acupuncture perspective of Professor J.R. Worsley and the Classical Five Element T'ai Chi work of Professor Cheng Man Ch'ing. These moves and energy massages support the treatments we give our patients: the building of inner strength and reserves of qi, support of the CF, and the enhancement of spirit.

9:00AM - 11:00AM The Gift of Not Knowing
Eliot Ivanhoe, M.D., M.Ac. (UK)

It is common for us to find ourselves in the treatment room without a clue. Faced with uncertainty, practitioners can be insecure, unconfident, or even paralyzed. Telling yourself to snap out of it is usually an ineffective and incorrect strategy. Here is a better one.

11:00AM - 11:30AM Break

11:30AM - 12:30PM The Art and Craft of Treating The Spirit
Khosrow Khalighi, M.Ac. (UK), L.Ac.

In Five Element Acupuncture, the accuracy of our diagnosis, the potency of our treatment, our ability to connect with the patient at the deepest level, and our facility for discerning the nuances of an imbalance, all are enriched through our ability to work directly with the Spirit. In this two-part presentation, with lecture and practical exercises, we shall work towards achieving proficiency in working with and treating the Spirit.

12:30PM - 2:00PM Lunch

2:00PM - 3:00PM The Art and Craft of Treating The Spirit (continued)

3:00PM - 3:15PM Break

3:15PM - 4:15PM Anti-Depressants: What You Need to Know
George Rodriguez, M.D.

SSRI's, mood stabilizing medications, anxiolytics, anti-psychotics, soporifics, stimulants, and hormones are among the pharmacopeias being prescribed to our patients. These types of drugs have a profound effect on the mind and spirit of our patients and can effect or block our practice of Five Element Acupuncture. Frequently, patients are placed on medications but there is never a discussion of what the end goal might be, side effects of medications or the possibility of discontinuation of therapy. Rapid withdrawal of medication may produce intense symptoms that can mimic physical or psychiatric syndromes. Dr. Rodriguez will discuss classes of mood altering drugs, mechanism of action, their effect on the body and the correct mechanism for supporting patients using these medications or on a tapering regimen.

4:15PM - 5:30PM The 12 Archetypes: Putting a Face on the Officials
Dirk Hein, M.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.

We know the functions of the Officials. How to put a face on these Officials when it is not obvious can still be a challenge. In this session, Dirk will teach how we can develop an eye for recognizing the possibilities of how these Officials may manifest within an Element. Much like a certain radio frequency that matches a particular station and its music, so are the Officials channels for particular Archetypes that appear in our personalities.

Sunday, September 11, 2011

7:30AM - 8:45AM Roots and Branches 5 Element Qi Gong
Stephen "Tuna" Flores, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.
Pat Gorman, M.Ac., B.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.

We will work with one position and one walk for each of the Five Elements. Within an element, the standing posture nourishes the yin Official; the active walk tonifies the yang Official, allowing us to work with an entire elemental CF. As part of a patient's homework, Roots and Branches Qi Gong enables them to continue to participate in their own healing between treatments.

9:00AM - 10:30AM Essential Oils and Intention: Classical Five Element Treatment Without Needles or Moxa
Stephen "Tuna" Flores, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.
Pat Gorman, M.Ac., B.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.

Needles and moxa are our primary tools to affect energetic changes. What can practitioners do when they cannot use them? Years ago, Master Herbalist Jeffrey Yuen, at our request, identified specific classical essential oils for the Five Element practitioner. Using these oils and principles, Pat and Steve will present oils for each Element, Aggressive Energy, Possession, Exit/Entry, as well as for tonification and sedation and instances when moxa cannot be used.

10:30AM - 11:00 Break

11:00AM - 12:00PM Healing While Dying: It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over
Stephen "Tuna" Flores, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.
Pat Gorman, M.Ac., B.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.

Our beautiful system of medicine has unique tools for staying with our patients through long-term illness, right to the end of life. It often has the power to pull patients back from the brink, even when Western Medicine has nothing left to offer. And, when it's finally time, we can support patients to be lucid and retain control in their final moments, walking with them to the border and gently letting go. Pat and Steve, who have worked in homes, hospitals, and hospices, bring the treatments, skills, and their experience to share.

12:00PM - 1:00PM Class Patient
Neil R. Gumenick, M.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.
In this session, Neil will present a patient and conduct an interview in front of class, followed by a discussion and assessment of the CF, level, pulse picture, and a treatment plan to be performed during the lunch break.

1:00pm - 2:30PM Lunch

2:30PM - 3:30PM Post Treatment Discussion and Treatment Planning
Neil R. Gumenick, M.Ac. (UK), L.Ac., Dipl. Ac.

In this session we will experience the patient post-treatment and plan three follow-up treatments, including the rationale for each point chosen and its order, with commentaries on the Spirits of the Points.

3:30PM - 3:45PM Break

3:45PM - 5:15PM Practitioner Panel
Various Symposium Presenters

Participants will have opportunities to openly discuss, with senior practitioners and teachers, issues about which they have concerns or questions.

5:15PM - 5:30PM Closure
Neil, David, Eliot, and Brian
